b) NIOSH, 626 Cochrans Mill Rd, P.O. Box 18070, Pittsburgh, PA 15236, USA; email: [email protected]. Despite advancements in engineering noise controls and the use of administra tive controls, miners are still dependent on hearing protection devices for prevention of noise-induced hearing loss. However, miners often complain of reduced audibility or confusion about identifying spoken words when wearing conventional hearing protectors. This leads to an increased risk of miners being struck by moving equipment or errors in communication with co-workers. Miners will often remove their hearing protectors to overcome these obstacles. To address this problem, electronic technology exists that allows some amount of sound to pass through the hearing protector, therefore restoring some audi bility of the passively attenuated sounds. This paper will present the results of testing completed on a selection of four sound restoration hearing protection devices, with the objective of determining if they provide improved speech intel ligibility to workers near certain types of mining equipment. Background & Objective : Noise is a widespread physical agent and although is a most risk factors in workplaces that workers of health to exposed. Thus, different actions is done for reduce exposure to it in work places, which one of them is use of hearing protection devices. It is known that exposure to high sound pressure levels can lead to permanent hearing loss; however, many workers, in mining as well as other occupational sectors, frequently receive hazardous noise exposures. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) recommends using a criterion level of 85 dB(A) for implementation of hearing loss prevention programs. But, despite engin...

Objectives: To our knowledge this study, conducted in 2007, was the first of its kind. The purpose was to compare a self-fitted personal sound amplification product (PSAP) with professionally-fitted hearing aids in terms of real-ear aided gain, audibility, and speech understanding in background noise. A second objective was to quantify subjects’ reactions to the PSAP used in this study. Design:...

Introduction: The latest way to control the use of hearing protection devices is sound. The amount of time spent on the phone by workers is one of the most important parameters in hearing conservation programs. The aim of the study is to evaluate the effectiveness of training scenario in theoretical and practical ways to increase using the ...
